Momiform Makeover

When I first heard about the Momiform Makeover series, I jumped at the opportunity. My “mom uniform” desperately needs a makeover! My son started preschool this year and I want to be as involved in his school as possible. I’ve always wanted to be the classy PTA mom who always looks her best. The problem is that I have a toddler who is very active. Active toddler + 4″ heels + skinny jeans= a recipe for disaster. On top of that, I would rather be comfortable above all else. They don’t make many pencil skirts and 4” heels that are as comfortable as a pair of yoga pants and moccasins (we can dream right!). I used patterns from Stitch Upon a Time, Sew Much Ado, Love Notions, A Sparkly Baby to make two looks that are a balance between class, style and comfort.

momiform title pagesPatterns that are made with knit fabrics are my answer! I love the Seafarer Top by Sew Much Ado because it’s a modern (and stylish!) twist on a classic t shirt. It pairs well with just about any bottoms which is a score for me because I struggle to find tops that I can wear with skirts.

Momiform Look 2

When you add the versatile Fauna Shrug from Stitch Upon a Time, the look is complete for fall. The Fauna has multiple sleeve variations and an optional hood. It will be my go-to pattern this fall. You can see 7 ways to wear the Fauna (one of which would look adorable with my second look too!) here.

Momiform Look 2

For my next look, I used the Pemberly Tunic & Dress pattern from Love Notions and the Women’s Yoga Skort from A Sparkly Baby and both fabrics are from fabric.com. I decided to make the Pemberly using the tunic and 3/4 sleeve variation, the perfect combination for cooler weather I thought. This is my first Love Notions pattern and I was pleasantly surprised by how it was put together. It has all the bells and whistles that picky PDF users like myself look for and praise. The leggings I made are more of a straight leg yoga pant. But you can’t tell that they are the most amazingly comfortable pants ever from the picture. Because style and comfort have never really gone hand in hand for me.  But they are, oh yes they are. They are made from a bamboo/rayon jersey, a fabric that I learned has a tendency to stretch out. After wearing them for a day, I realized it’s not a huge issue for this style. I added the belt (which is elasticized) for added interest, though I’m not big on wearing accessories. And I think it really pulls everything together.

In the theme of creating my new “momiform”, of course my son had to help in some small way. “Yes honey, the batteries are dead and we have to fix it.” <3

  1. Brianne says:

I would love the Hampton Hoodie from Peekaboo Patterns, and the Sporty Skorty from A Sparkly Baby for myself. (And also need to get my hands on the Lil Bug undies from ASB, to match my scrundies!)

  2. Tabitha says:

Cute outfits Jennifer! I’m planning on making a few fall clothing items for myself and then selling some of my store bought things at a big women’s/home décor consignment event next month. I haven’t been able to shop for new clothes from stores for a long time so I’m in desperate need of a “momiform makeover”. It’s gotten so bad that all the pairs of yoga pants I live in have holes around the seams….they are THAT old and THAT worn…yikes!

    • Jennifer says:

It sounds like you definitely need to make sure that plan goes into action 😉 The greatest part about making your own clothing is that they will fit exactly how you want them to since you get to decide everything about them. You can have cute pants that are as comfy as holy yoga pants 🙂

  3. Cynthia says:

Thanks for this! The concept of momiform never even occurred to me but mine definitely needs a makeover! I’d love to look as cute as I do in skinny jeans/heels every day but that is most definitely not realistic. Not only would I turn an ankle but my 40 year old lower back would have some words for me. I can’t wait to play with my wardrobe by adding a cute shrug. yoga leggings, and a belt. Yay!

    • Jennifer says:

I’ve seen all of the suat creations you’ve done and I’d say you are well on your way to that makeover! In these two outfits, I feel really great comfort-wise and looks. You can’t ask for more than that!

  4. Megan says:

You look great! I can totally relate to needing my mom uniform updated. These are definitely great pieces for your wardrobe – stylish, while still easy to wear and do all that needs to be done. Oh – and all excellent pattern designers!

  5. Christina says:

I like the seafarer pattern too. The top is very flattering on you. I have one I made with sweater knit which I love. It too pairs perfectly with my fauna shrug.

  6. Kelly Smith says:

I love fashion advice for mommies! I have about zero sense of style and don’t really want to wear mom jeans. 🙂

I love that I can make my own clothing that’s trendy and unique too!

  7. Paula Barron says:

Wow those are some awesome ways to spruce up the momiform! I love the Fauna Shrug and I can see it being a wardrobe staple for me this year! Thanks for giving us not only great patterns but different ideas on how to wear them!

  8. Erica says:

Jennifer, I love your ideas and love the look of your new Shrug pattern. I think using knits also helps moms with the ever present laundry pile as most knits wash easily and don’t need ironing.

  9. Brenda says:

I love All the features of the Janome! Lol. But an automatic thread cutter sounds pretty cool. I wonder if it has a notification when your bobbin is low. I have always wanted a machine with that feature.

  10. Lucy says:

So many patterns to choose from! I’d sew the girl’s otium sweater and domi pants from sofilantjes, pjs and boys undies from peekaboo, the new boy’s shirt coming out by terra’s traeasures. So many projects so little time.

  11. Kayla says:

I’d love to win a machine with so many options! Mine only has 14 so it would be fun to experiment. I love your clothing choices too. Comfortable yet classy. 🙂

  12. Cynthia says:

I’m a true blue SUAT fan and have made almost every single of her patterns and love them (including the new Fauna shrug). I’ve never tried Love Notions, though, so I’d love to try the Pemberly!

  13. Trisha Faunce says:

As for a pattern I’d love to try, I would like to try the Pemberly dress and tunic pattern by Love Notions. It looks so flattering on you! Definitely something I’d wear 🙂

  14. Lois says:

I have been dying to sew the everyday elegance women’s tunic top and the women’s raglan shirt and tunic from Patterns For Pirates.

  15. Kenna Peters says:

I’m pretty excited about the 91 needle positions on the Janome! I’m currently trying to decide which fabric to use for a pair of Palauchos (from A Sparkly Baby) and coordinating Fauna Shrug from Stitch Upon A Time!

  16. Courtney roach says:

I love this. I would love to use the flora, the Hyde park hoodie, the layer me up/free spirit tank mash up, and the easy peasy crossover. 😊

  17. Tammie says:

I love these! You look great Jennifer and I love your SUAT patterns! I need more Fauna shrugs 😀 I also love the Love Notions Pemberley top and would like to try the Seafarer top and ASB yoga skort they look so cute on you! Whoever came up with the momiform makeover is a genius…I want one! And I want the Janome! I don’t even know what some of those feature mean but just the memorized needle function and 91 needle positions make me swoon 😀

I love the memorized up and down needle function! And everything else about it! Thanks for this opportunity! And I love the momiform concept!

  20. megan labombard says:

The peplum from sew much ado! I think I finally found what I’m making my son’s 3 year old cousin for her birthday! I’ve been having the hardest time figuring it out! Thanks!
